Against The Grain

The Vehicles

It is the intent for the four disabled riders to ride the complete distance (more than 5,000km) on their quad bikes with support vehicles following close behind. As the journey will be filmed as a documentary, the film crew will be close at hand in most situations. The balance of the support crew can travel independently meeting up each evening and available in the situation of a problem occurring.

Each day has been based on 3-4 hours travelling on the quads with a maximum of 8.5 hours in the saddle.

The idea is to leave enough time each day to experience our country and socialise with people that we meet on this journey.

Most night’s accommodation will be camping with the riders in separate tents. We have a desire to be able to look after ourselves entirely including setting up tents and our ablutions. Most camping equipment will be taken on the support vehicles ensuring that the quad bikes can operate safely.

We look forward to sitting around the fire each evening catching up on the days events

Vehicle Disclaimer

At the time of preparing for this journey it was legal for wheelchair users to license quad bikes for the road as a motorised wheelchair.
There are still vehicles licensed as such.
Unfortunately the laws are changing and this may not allow the normal licensing of these vehicles for this trip.
We are in negotiations with the licensing group to obtain a mutually agreeable outcome which we anticipate to have completed by end November 2009 with our website updated with which vehicles we will be using.

UPDATE

On Wednesday 19th May 2010 we received our permits for the Against the Grain Trip.
The permits last 6 months and have conditions associated but will enable the team to train and visit sponsor sites before, during and after the August 2010 Journey.

Unfortunately we have not yet finalised the bike and rider license for Anton Zappelli as he has been in hospital since early May 2010 and we need him and his bike assessed together. We expect this in early June 2010 as we intend a test trip to Collie on the Long weekend leaving Sunday 6th June returning Monday 7th June 2010.
The Department of Transport and Police have worked hard to ensure that we can operate safely on the roads during this project and their support and guidance was appreciated.
